║ REVISION HISTORY ║
╚══════════════════════╝
Ver. Date
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
1.0 March 01, 1993 Initial Release
╔═════════════════╗
║ QUICK START ║
╚═════════════════╝
1) Create a directory on your hard disk & copy the distribution
archive file to that directory. Decompress the archive file.
2) Run the install program NEINSTAL and follow the on-screen prompts.
(hopefully these should be self explanatory) NEMENU is most
effective when it resides in a directory that is on the path.
NEINSTAL can modify the path in your AUTOEXEC.BAT if you wish; a
backup file will be created for you.
NEINSTAL will create two files in the installation directory: NEMENU.INI
which holds all of the network connection information that you will
supply, and N.BAT which is a small batch file that is used to invoke
NEMENU.
3) If you decided to have NEINSTAL modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT, then reboot
your computer once NEINSTAL has finished.
4) Type 'N' at the DOS prompt to bring up the NeMenu. (If you didn't have
NEINSTAL modify your autoexec, you must be in the directory created in
step 1 above)
A couple of helpful hints:
┌────────────────────┐
│ For mouse users: │
└────────────────────┘
A single click of the left mouse button is used to select
entries, while a single click of the right mouse button will
ESCAPE from a menu or screen.
Pressing the right mouse button while the mouse cursor is
located on a menu entry (Connecting PRINTER and FILE services,
F1 and F3 respectively, and the NODE menu in various places)
will enable you to erase a resource entry from NEMENU.INI. This
is helpful when you enter an incorrect password or make a
typographical error when entering a description or service name.
┌────────────────────┐
│ Without a mouse: │
└────────────────────┘
The RETURN or ENTER key will select an entry, while the
ESCAPE key will return you to the main menu.
To remove an resource entry from the selection menu (Connecting
PRINTER and FILE services, F1 and F3 respectively, and the NODE
menu in various places) use the arrow keys to highlight the
entry, then hit the DELETE key. This is helpful when you enter
an incorrect password or make a typographical error when
entering a description or service name.

║ General Comments ║
╚════════════════════╝
Now for some comments on the wording that is used throughout the
program and the enclosed documentation.
'Node/Server' is used to designate the computer on which
PATHWORKS is running from. Node is used here to denote a node
on a VAX cluster, not a PC node on the network.
'Resources' are defined here as the printer and disk/file
services that are available through PATHWORKS, at the PC level.
'Printer Queues' are just that, as defined on the Server. These
names are limited to twelve (12) characters with the 'Basic
Redirector' and eight (8) characters with the 'Enhanced
Redirector'. The "Connect Printer Service" selection of NeMenu
requires that the printer queue names be known.

║ As and Added Bonus ... ║
╚══════════════════════════╝
I've also included an additional text file on how to remove blank
pages from Hewlett Packard LaserJet Printer queues, you know, the
blank pages that come out after every print job. We were able to
correct this problem at our sight after YEARS of blank pages. The
fix, which is so simple (simple for the network Administrator that
is!) it takes all of about 15-20 minutes (at least that's how long
it took on our system). The solution is in the file EXPAGES.TXT!

║ Printing the Documentation ║
╚══════════════════════════════╝
As you may have noticed, I'm using the extended ASCII character set
throughout this document (the graphic characters used in the boxes),
which may not print correctly if you submit this file (or the
documentation file NEMANUAL.DOC) to your printer.
On an HP Laserjet printer, the symbol set needs to be switched from
the default ROMAN-8 symbol set to the IBM-PC symbol set. This can
be done through the menu on the control panel, or by an ESCAPE code
embedded in the document. The escape code is:
<ESC>(10U
To switch the symbol set, simply enter this escape code at the
beginning of the document. You may also include the escape sequence
in a file (for example PRN2HPLJ.COD) by itself, and submit this file
to your printer using the DOS print command as follows:
C:> PRINT PRN2HPLJ.COD
Hit return to accept the default name PRN when prompted by DOS.
This command will cause a blank page to be printed, but the symbol
set will have been permanently changed (at least until the printer
is turned off and back on, at which point the ROMAN-8 symbol set
will be the default set). For network printers, this escape code
will need to be in the document itself. Simply use your favorite text
editor to include the above escape code as the first line of the
document that you would like to print. You need not include it in all
documents, since the symbol set does not get reset after each job.
Now, submit the NeMenu document in the same manner. For instance,
of you wanted to print this file, you would enter the following:
C:> PRINT NEREADME.1ST
and for the NeMenu documentation, the command would be:
C:> PRINT NEMANUAL.DOC
If you have a printer other than the HP LaserJet family of printers,
consult your printer manual to determine the escape sequence
required to print the IBM graphic characters.
If you would like to print any of the documentation to an DEC LN03
laser printer, GRAB the PRTIBM.ZIP file from the DECPCI Forum on
CompuServe (LIB 10, PD/Shareware) which allows you to print the IBM
graphic characters on the LN03. If you're not a member of CompuServe,
you can also get it in the Just-In-Time Computing Services Conference
on the ESC, Inc. BBS @ (607) 533-7072. This is a free BBS, you only
pay for the phone call.
I realize that this is a pretty rudimentary way to print the docs,
But I wanted them to look good without having to spend a lot of time
writing a special printing program.

║ Getting Additional Help ║
╚═══════════════════════════╝
If you need help, please consult the documentation, which is in the
file NEMANUAL.DOC. If you can't find a solution to your problem,
you can contact me at (607) 257-6517 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm EST
(please note the Time Zone!) or on Compuserve at 73020,3205. You
can also leave me a message on the ESC Inc BBS, (607) 533-7072; Join
the Just-In-Time Computing Services Conference (Conference #8); this
is a free board, you only pay for the phone call. I check both CIS
and the ESC BBS Daily.
